GUSTAFER YELLOWGOLD's MELLOW SENSATION concerts are a unique blend of live music and moving image. The minimally animated illustrations are accompanied by illustrator/songwriter, Morgan Taylor's, catchy and original story-songs for a truly different multimedia experience that is entrancing children, teens and adults. The character of Gustafer is a friendly creature who came to Earth from the sun and has an unusual magnetism for making friends with some of Earth's odder creatures. The New York Times said, "The show is a cross between Yellow Submarine and Dr. Seuss." Entertainment Weekly praised "...The most infectious original songs. It's like tapping into some pleasure center in the brain--both adult and kid...absurdly appealing." Grade: A+ New York Magazine named Morgan Taylor, "Best Kids' Performer," in its 2008 Best of New York issue. "Mint Green Bee" from Gustafer Yellowgold's Wide Wild World is the Session I Grand Prize Winner in the children's category of the John Lennon Songwriting Competion, while "The Bluebird Tree" from Gustafer Yellowgold's Have You Never Been Yellow? is also a finalist.

ERIC TAYLOR is a sage musician, a lyrical genius and a master of the guitar. If you're familiar with the intricate Texas singer/songwriter jigsaw puzzle, you probably already know a lot about Taylor. If you're not familiar with Taylor by name, you've probably heard his songs performed by people such as Nanci Griffith and Lyle Lovett. He has created a multitude of fans and devotees that are legends themselves in the singer/songwriter realm, artists who have long considered Taylor to be a teacher and a lantern bearer whose time is long overdue.

In 1977, Taylor was a winner of the New Folk Competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Shameless Love, his first album, came out in 1981, and after a hiatus of almost 14 years, he returned with the self-titled album in 1995. His eponymous release was chosen as the 1996 Kerrville Folk Festival "Album of the Year." Three years later, he released Resurrect, and it was subsequently named one of the "100 essential records of all time" by Buddy Magazine. 2001 brought forth Scuffletown, and shortly following the release, Taylor headlined the prestigious Newport Folk Festival, played National Public Radio's Mountain Stage and has appeared on both Late Night With David Letterman with Nanci Griffith and Austin City Limits with Lyle Lovett, Guy Clark, and Robert Earl Keen. The Kerrville Tapes (2003) is his first live album, recorded during three years of appearances at the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival.

There's something special about THE FAREWELL DRIFTERS, a quintet composed of two acoustic guitars, mandolin, fiddle & upright bass. The Farewell Drifters have managed to project a sound that, according to their bio, "casually, but clearly" defies any preconceived notion based on their line up. Their shimmering harmonies are delicately placed over catchy melodies, and delivered with charmingly honest, yet pure vocals. Though their instrumentation might initially cause one to categorize their sound, The Farewell Drifters have managed to engage audiences from all walks of sound. From traditional music fans to rock lovers; this band has an energy strong enough to transcend genre lines. On their latest album, the Farewell Drifters drew influence from musical greats like Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Brian Wilson, and more to create a classically soulful and innovative sound. With a future that promises nothing short of success, it's safe to say this quintet won't be saying farewell any time soon! They are currently touring in support of their third album, Echo Boom, which debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart.

For almost 20 years, every Monday night, we've been hosting a SONGWRITER'S OPEN MIC. On any given Monday, you'll get to hear some touring performing songwriters, some local touring songwriters home from the road, some local songwriters that don't tour, some up and comers working on their chops, some amateurs that will never tour, and sometimes, someone that you can look back and say I heard them when...but be guaranteed, it'll be an entertaining evening! And for $5, probably one of the greatest entertainment values in the land. For more information on playing at our Open Mic, visit the Artist Info page of our website.

If you’re like us, you prefer your music home grown, and not manufactured. Well, musicians don’t get much more home grown than HEATHER LUTTRELL, who grew up traveling the country with her father’s band. Music began as a vital part of her childhood; it eventually became an integral part of her soul. For nearly a decade now, Heather has dedicated her life to sowing her music among the masses, cultivating a dedicated following from the ground up. In 2002, she released the live solo album, Drive It Like You Stole It, and in 2005 she followed Drive… up with the full length studio album, Grits n’ Pulp. She toured extensively to support both releases, surrounding herself with a host of award-winning musicians (her rhythm section won the International Blues Challenge in 2003) and opening for the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Marshall Tucker Band, The GA Satellites, The Zac Brown Band, Dave Mason, Johnette Napolitano, Shawn Mullins, Alana Davis, Tift Merritt, Jakob Dylan, Over the Rhine, Angie Aparo, Amos Lee, Ryan Adams, Elton John, The John Butler Trio, Delbert McClinton, Richard Thompson, Brandi Carlile, Bain Mattox, Melissa Ferrick, and Eyes Adrift. In 2005, Heather became a contestant on Rock Star: INXS, an international reality show where singers vied to become frontman (or frontwoman) for the seminal Australian-based rock and pop band. Heather made it to the top 15, but was eliminated in the middle rounds of the televised contest. While INXS’s music didn’t reflect the sentiment and sensibility of Heather’s own music, she chalks the it up as a life-changing learning experience. The show also exposed Heather to an even broader fan base – it was like fertilizer on an already fertile field. Most recently, Heather has thrown herself headlong into touring in support of her studio EP, Pomegranate, and another full length live recording, Live From the Kirkwood Public House. Some of the highlights of Heather’s latest flurry of touring have been her spots on the Lynyrd Skynyrd Cruise, the Kid Rock Cruise, and the Cayamo Cruise, where she played the same stage as Lyle Lovett, Patty Griffin, Darrell Scott, Buddy Miller, and The Indigo Girls.

Hardworking, energetic, mountain girl with a big voice…these could all describe NIKKI TALLEY. Raised in North Carolina and hailing from Asheville, it’s only fitting that her music is as eclectic as the state that boasts the mountains and the sea. Trying to pin down Nikki’s style, critics and reviewers alike have compared her to an early Liz Phair and Gillian Welch, but to leave the comparisons there would be doing a disservice to her fiery stage performance, hauntingly seductive and raw gritty lyrics, lifted by a voice that harkens back to the Appalachian roots from which she was born, and shores up on the edges of contemporary southern rock, country, blues, and jazz that has her audiences stomping and clapping for more. Nikki’s energy is as big as her voice and has taken her over all over the Southeast, playing such prestigious festivals as Magnolia Fest in Live Oak, FL to the Shakori Hills Festival in Pittsboro, NC. She’s had the pleasure of opening for such national acts as Edwin McCain and Susan Tedeschi. Nikki’s latest release, Beautiful Charmer, has definitely upped the ante production-wise and has a decidedly more country feel. For this project she had a lot of help from a number of collaborators including Grammy-winning alt-country icon Jim Lauderdale. It garnered the No. 7 spot in WNCW’s Top 20 Regional Releases of 2010 and No. 23 in Top 100 Releases.

Music that breathes. That's really the most fitting description for the essence of ERICK BAKER's songs. Since releasing his debut EP, It's Getting Too Late To Say It's Early, in 2008, Erick's unique voice and very personal songwriting style have led listeners through music rich with themes that connect us all – hopes, fears, love, and loss. A skillful blend of widely divergent influences -- rock, pop, soul, blues, country, folk – has resulted in a distinctive genre he calls "American Music." Erick has toured with a variety of artists, including James Blunt, Gavin Degraw, Edwin McCain, Goo Goo Dolls, Grace Potter, Brandi Carlile and Heart. Erick's musical journey has been forged largely with the haunting lyrical honesty that pervades his songwriting. The authenticity of Erick's songs, simply put, are an honest, reflective window on themes central to the emotional cornerstones of our lives. It is music that has proven universally appealing, uniting fans and cutting seamlessly across lines of age, lifestyle and musical taste. As a result, Erick's live performances set him apart in his genre. "That's when my songs are at their best," he declares. "I want people to feel the songs, the words, not just hear them." That philosophy is borne out when Erick is onstage; his aching intensity and deeply soulful delivery connect him to his audience in a way that is at once genuine and memorable. Erick just finished recording his second full length album, produced by Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo), which is set to release in early 2012.

MIEKA PAULEY began as a solo artist in Boston. Her haunting voice and heartbreaking lyrics gained her more than a few fans, securing her bills with Citizen Cope, KT Tunstall, Natasha Bedingfield, Ben Kweller, Mason Jennings, John Legend, the Avett Brothers and many others. She won the first ever Starbucks Emerging Artist Award and the New York Songwriters Circle Songwriting Contest, and she was named Cosmopolitan Magazine's Fun Fearless Female Rockstar of the YearImagine Radiohead tiptoeing silently behind Patty Griffin as she makes her way backstage. Imagine Jeff Buckley in drag, singing along loudly at a Nirvana concert. Imagine Death Cab hiding in the back of an Emily Dickinson reading. She describes their music as "mainstream indie rock" and feels the contradiction perfectly describes her obsessions.

When it comes to making great music, kindred spirits somehow seem to find each other and such is the case with EDENS EDGEAfter Cherrill, Dean and Hannah joined to form Edens Edge, the group steadily gained popularity, touring extensively around the region and winning area talent competitions. An entry in the 2006 CMT/NSAI Songwriter’s Contest caught the attention of Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member, Kye Fleming, known for penning such classic hits as Barbara Mandrell’s “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool,” Sylvia’s “Nobody,” Ronnie Milsap’s “Smoky Mountain Rain.” “Kye contacted us and found out that we were 40 miles down the road from where she grew up in Fort Smith,” Hannah says of their Arkansas connection. They made the Nashville leap in 2007 and began working with Fleming to hone their unique sound. Working with producer, Mark Bright (Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts), the trio crafted a stellar debut that showcases their strengths as musicians as well as their compelling vocal blend. They also flex their muscles as songwriters, co-writing with such proven "hitmakers" as Vince Melamed, Catt Gravitt and Danny Myrick. Hannah co-wrote the trio’s first single, “Amen” drawing from her rural experiences. Music has taken the young members of Edens Edge on an intriguing journey and they are thankful for the ride.

“When I write a song,” says DARDEN SMITH, “the way it ends up is usually not the way I thought it would be when I started.” And that notion of exploration, of following unexpected paths, has been a constant force in his 25-year career as a musician. Smith has long transcended traditional singer-songwriter boundaries, and his varied, fascinating musical legacy continues to evolve.  His dozen critically acclaimed albums, recorded from New York to Nashville and London to Los Angeles, weave together rock, pop, country, folk and Americana influences with the musical roots of his home state of Texas. Smith, praised by All Music Guide as “a singer-songwriter blessed with an uncommon degree of intelligence, depth, and compassion,” enjoys broad appeal on both the American and British music scenes. Likened to songwriters such as Nick Drake, John Hiatt, Leonard Cohen and Elvis Costello, Smith is one of contemporary’s music’s most winning and gifted artistic treasures whose consistent creative excellence keeps blossoming.  With Marathon, his most recent release, Smith again pushes into new territory, delivering a sweeping collection of songs that captures the stark panorama of the West. The 15-track album draws its inspiration – and title – from the remote towns and barren landscape of West Texas, the backdrop for the theatre project to accompany Marathon. Developing a dramatic song cycle for the stage is yet one more turn for a singer-songwriter who has also, among other things, composed a symphony, produced a radio documentary, scored dance troupe compositions and founded an innovative program to foster creativity in students.

Somewhere nestled between the warmth of Mindy Smith’s melodies, the peppy lyrics of Ingrid Michaelson, and the unforgettable vocals of Dolly Parton was born the musical stylings of MOLLY PARDEN. Molly appeals to that part of listeners who long for the nostalgia of folk music, with lyrics that remind us of a kind of simple love, the kind of love that catches your breath and let’s you know that you’re not alone. With a voice soft enough to make you listen and a message clear enough to stand out, Molly woos her audience tenderly, strumming an acoustic guitar, sliding a bow against her violin, and singing with an affection that speaks to each and every listener. In a musical world that can so often seem overwhelming, Molly is a vital breath of fresh air, a young woman who can sing the sun to sleep under a Georgia horizon just as easily as she can stir it to waking. So sit back, heat up a pot of coffee, and ease into some effortless tunes with a woman who hasn’t forgotten to step back and remember the purity of music.

As described by Amazon.com, MIKE DOUGHTY is the "cult poet and musician, " whose been most recently noted for smash hits, "27 Jennifers" and "Looking at the World From the Bottom of a Well." He led the band, Soul Coughing, in the 90s, wrote an Aquaman story for DC Comics, published Slanky: A Book of Poetry, wrote one-act plays for the 24 Hour Company, recorded a Christmas duet with Rosanne Cash, and was a pseudonymous gossip columnist at the New York Press. He is acclaimed for his lyrics, once described by the New Yorker as, having "more puzzling allusions than the Cantos of Ezra Pound." He's now touring in support of his 2011 latest record, Yes And Also Yes, which was the header of his online dating profile. Stay tuned for his latest project, The Book of Drugs, written about, as he calls it, his "ugly, drug-doing years," coming out in 2012.

SERYN is a 5 piece band who calls Denton, Texas their home. When listening to the well layered textures of guitars, ukulele, accordion, bass, viola, banjo and various percussion, it's hard to imagine This Is Where We Are is the band's debut effort. Their beauty is gracefully displayed through chilling harmonies. What may first appear as straight folk songs, later transcend into menacing walls of sound. The term "Folk-Pop" has been thrown around and maybe it loosely fits, but we will leave the definitions up to you. The Denton Record-Chronicle said, "Seryn's set was so dynamic that you could feel the key changes in your feet, through Festival Hall’s concrete floor!" While the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported, "Watching Seryn perform, it's hard to convince yourself that those crystalline, multi-part harmonies are not pre-recorded or some kind of sleight of ear." This is Where We Are was produced by Britton Beisenherz (Ramble Creek), and recorded over the course of a few months. The experience felt at their live show seems to be captured well in these recordings, which was something of great importance to the band. The band has created their own buzz in the most traditional way too by winning people over at their shows. It's not often that a band without a record out is able to play so many great bills and sold out shows. Much less, be nominated for awards such as "Best Folk Artist" and "Song of the Year" (Dallas Observer).

Sarah Place and Aileen Bleach will both be training for a FULL marathon (26.2 miles, people!) with Team In Training in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We've seen hundreds of participants cross the finish line and do it for something bigger than themselves. We've seen them raise literally millions of dollars for cancer research. Another thing we've seen is how these funds are unquestionably responsible for better treatments, allowing patients to LIVE, and live a better quality life.

They've committed to raising over $6,500 during our months of training and want to make the experience FUN! Please join us for this special event with special thanks to Bob Place of The Laughing Skull.

Over the years, THE FREDDY JONES BAND has received rave reviews. Capricorn Records signed the group after their self-titled and self-released debut sold more than 10,000 copies in 1992. The band steadily built an audience with 1993's Waiting for the Night, 1995's North Ave. Wake Up, and 1997's Lucid. Lucid reached No. 19 on Billboard's Heatseekers Chart. Rolling Stone stated, the group is a "fine line between schizophrenic jam band and sensibly minded pop rock." All Music Guide said, the Freddy Jones Band's "sound, at times, is reminiscent of the Allman Brothers." They are currently touring in support of their latest release, Time Well Wasted, the first album released since their 1999 record, Mile High Live. Stay tuned because they're currently back in the studio working on an upcoming record and in March of 2012, The Freddy Jones Band will join the rest of the bands on The Rock Boat Music Festival.
